Creative Works Criteria
Introduction
Major original creative works undertaken by CSU staff and published in any medium which create new knowledge are considered as research and contribute to the staff member's workload, performance management portfolio, eligibility for promotion, and consideration as being research productive. Publication is widely defined and includes exhibition, performance, books, hybrid arts events, films, video, CD, DVD, online on the World Wide Web, and other forms of new media, providing the conditions are met. Charles Sturt University must be clearly noted or identified as the supporting institution .
Categories
Categories may include but not necessarily be limited to:
- artworks shown in solo, collaborative or group exhibitions;
- artworks acquired by a major gallery, museum or other significant collector;
- live or recorded performances of new and original creative works, which may be music or other sound works, plays, dance, performance or performance art;
- hybrid art productions;
- broadcast radio and television projects;
- films and other works selected for screening at festivals;
- novels,
- short stories, either anthologised or forming an entire collection;
- books of poetry or several anthologised poems;
- play scripts, television scripts or film scripts;
- scores of musical works;
- recordings of live music, theatre or dance performances which are innovative interpretations of new approaches;
- world wide web sites;
- other new media productions.
Eligibility
To be included in this category, the original creative work must meet one of the following requirements:
- Curated exhibitions of substantial collections of original work by an individual artist exhibited in a recognised gallery or museum as either a solo exhibition or substantial part of a collaborative or group exhibition. The exhibition should be accompanied by a scholarly catalogue identifying the individual works and the timing and location of the exhibition. The exhibition must be advertised or otherwise publicised in the arts, national or local press, or in professional journals. The gallery or museum must be registered as an independent public or commercial organisation, and the exhibition must conform to the Code of Practice of the National Association for the Visual Arts.
- Writing original stage plays and other theatrical or performance activity, including original interpretations of extant texts, produced in a recognised community, subsidised, or commercial theatre or performance venue, or in public spaces, and carried out under appropriate professional conditions such as those recommended by the Actors' Equity Section of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance for non-profit, profit-sharing or commercial ventures. The production should be accompanied by a program identifying the work, the timing and location of the production, and the contribution of the participants. The production must be advertised or otherwise publicised in the arts, national or local press, or in professional journals.
- Substantial written creative or scholarly work, such as novels, play scripts, poetry, screen plays, musical scores or short stories which are separately bound/packaged for distribution in book form as part or whole , and offered for distribution or sale under the imprint of a recognised cooperative, community or commercial publisher, arts organisation or other appropriate body. A recognised cooperative, community or commercial publisher or arts organisation is an entity which has as part of its mission the production or distribution of books, and distributing them either gratis or for sale.
- Substantial creative or scholarly work which is separately bound/packaged or recorded for distribution in any media such as film, electronic/video art, CD, video, DVD etc, and offered for distribution or sale under the imprint of a recognised cooperative, community or commercial publisher, arts organisation or other appropriate body. A recognised cooperative, community or commercial publisher or arts organisation is an entity which has as part of its core business the production or distribution of books, films, CD, videotapes, DVDs and distributing them either gratis or for sale.
- Original audio or tele-visual material broadcast by community, subsidised or commercial radio or television stations at local or national level. The works should be advertised as forming part of the station's program, in either members' newsletters, or local, industry or national press.
- Original short or feature length films or electronic/video art selected for screening at recognised film or other festivals. The works should be advertised as forming part of the festival's program and be listed and critiqued in any publications accompanying the festival, as appropriate.
- Original and substantial individual or cooperative hybrid arts productions that may include elements such as drama, performance, music, dance, film, video, DVD, sound, installation art and scenography, produced in a recognised community, subsidised, or commercial theatre or performance venue, or in public spaces, and carried out under appropriate professional conditions such as those recommended by the Actors' Equity Section of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance for non-profit, profit-sharing or commercial ventures. The production should be accompanied by a scholarly program identifying the work, the timing and location of the production, and the contribution of the participants. The production must be advertised or otherwise publicised in the arts, national or local press, or in professional journals.
- Original and substantial creative work developed for online publication via the World Wide Web. Such works may be interactive, and should be advertised or otherwise promoted on the internet or in other relevant media, and responses sought. The original work and the reaction received must be documented in permanent and accessible form.
- Original and substantial creative work in new media, which may be in forms as yet undeveloped. The work should be publicly exhibited or otherwise published, and promoted in the relevant media. Appropriate critiques or other responses should be sought, and they and the original work should be documented in permanent and accessible form.
Review
Original creative works submitted for consideration as research must have been reviewed in one of the following ways:
- reviewed by a selection panel for acceptance in an exhibition, festival, book, collection or other program;
- reviewed in a newspaper or magazine;
- reviewed in scholarly journals;
- reviewed in professional journals; or
- undergone editorial or creative review in the case of novels or television programs.
Documentation and Verification
Documentation and verification for all works in this category must be supplied to the University by the artist, as follows:
- Documentation
- for creative works that are produced in singular, permanent, small scale and transportable form, such as a book, video, CD, DVD or film, a copy of the work is required. This will include publishing and printing details, all dates referring to copyright and if appropriate the ISBN must also be supplied;
- for creative works published on the web or as new media, the full web address should be provided and when appropriate the website should be presented on CD;
- for works that are in permanent but multiple forms, such as the paintings comprising an exhibition, a small scale and transportable copy of the works shall be provided, such as slides or a CD. Advertising and publicity material and reviews of critical comment must also be provided;
- for work published via the World Wide Web, a copy of the website at a particular date/dates should be provided on CD together with any documentation regarding interactivity or other responses to the site;
- for written works that would otherwise be ephemeral, such as a theatre performance, dance work, musical concert, performance (art) or hybrid arts activity a copy of the script, score or scenario shall be provided. A copy of the published program and copies of advertisements, other promotional material and reviews must also be supplied;
- for work published in new media the Review Committee (see below) may from time to time determine additional appropriate forms of documentation
- Verification
In addition the creator of the work shall supply to the University the following:- for an individually created work, a statement attesting that the work is the result of the creative activity of the artist and arises from the creator's academic expertise;
- if the work is part of a cooperative project the attestation should identify which part of the project is the work of the university staff member, and which part was contributed by the other collaborators;
- Review Committee:
Submissions outlining original creative works conducted in the previous year will be reviewed annually by the end of May.
Works should be submitted by the end of the third week of May.
The Review Committee will be comprised of:- Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)
- Head of School of Visual and Performing Arts
- Sub-Dean (Research) Faculty of Arts
- One member of the staff of the School of Visual and Performing Arts nominated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)
- One member of the staff of the University who has expertise with Creative Works.
- Creative Works Points (CWP)
One or more Creative Works Points will be allocated to solely or jointly produced works or a collective body of works. Equal allocation will be implemented for joint works unless a letter by the joint contributors states otherwise. Each piece of work or collective body of works will be allocated one or more Creative Works Points on the basis of the nature of the work or body of works taking into account equivalence with a DEEWR accredited refereed book or book chapter, journal article and published conference paper.
CWP will be recognised for the purposes of determining Research Productive Staff and allocating Research Publication Grants.
